You Never Know How Much
Time You Have
By Emma - 6th Grade

When I got home from school, my mom told me to call my friend, Olivia. Olivia is a year younger than me and loves acting. She has light brown hair and has freckles. My mom told me that her family had to put their oldest dog, Maddie, to sleep. Maddie was a small dog that looked like a Pomeranian. I sat on my living room couch and called Olivia on the phone. I told Olivia how I was so sad that Maddie was put to sleep. Olivia’s family already knew that Maddie was sick, but then she got worse. Maddie started to stop eating and got really sick, so they had to put Maddie to sleep. Olivia had just come back from her trip and only got to spend a day with Maddie before she had to go. Olivia and her family were very sad about losing Maddie. Olivia also has another dog named Mrs. Potts. They said that at the beginning it seemed like Mrs. Potts was looking for Maddie. After a while she stopped. I’m glad Olivia still has Mrs. Pots.
Another sad event was when my grandpa recently passed away. I called him Khuṇ pū̀. It’s Thai for grandpa. My family and I miss him very much. One of his favorite sports was golf. A few types of food that he liked were noodles named Yen-ta-fo and fish. I didn’t get to spend much time with him because his house was an hour away from mine. My family and I didn’t have time to go to my grandparent’s house often. When we did go, my grandpa usually took my sister and I to the park. He died because he had nerve damage in his neck. He got nerve damage because somebody pressed down too hard on his neck when he went to get a massage. Not long after, he got surgery, but the surgery made it worse. He got very weak. He stayed at his house with my grandma. Then, when I was at my house, my dad got a call saying that my grandpa had just passed away. We went over to my grandma’s and grandpa’s house and found my grandma crying by my grandpa’s side. Their friends and my grandparents from my mom’s side had come over too. My family was devastated that my grandpa passed away. We all loved him very much.
This experience convinces me that it would be best to spend more time with family while they’re alive because it shows that you never know how much time you get to spend with them. Maddie gave Olivia and her family joy. My grandfather’s life gave me happiness.
