All About Writing Clubs:

Every fall, winter, and summer Mrs. Flint hosts a 10-week virtual writing club for kids in the 3rd - 4th grade, 5th - 6th grade, and 7th - 8th grade.  Each unique class hones in on a specific academic focus through a project-based arts-infusion curriculum.  Whether it be nonfiction or fiction, essay writing or story craft, kids complete a self-driven writing and art project that builds their creativity, critical thinking, and writing skills.  They learn and practice grammar, reading comprehension, organization, writing flow, and much more, while applying these skills in creative projects relevant to their own lives.  â€‹â€‹

WINTER SEMESTER 2025
January 22nd - March 31st

SCIENCE FICTION ADVENTURE

Over the course of ten weeks, students will research, plan and write a science fiction

("sci-fi") short story.  Books in the Sci-Fi genre typically examine how real or imagined science impacts society and individuals.  Students will investigate a real scientific or technological question and use this research to build an imaginary and/or futuristic world.  Inside this world, they will create characters who embark on a journey that unearths deeper questions about humanity as a whole.

Students will analyze excerpts from science fiction stories, practice effective writing techniques, and build their imaginative mind. They will focus on:

  • Incorporating research into fiction

  • Understanding/devising literary themes

  • Writing with detail, specificity, and figurative lanaguage (in setting and character)

  • Character development over time

  • Story structure and unique storytelling strategies (such as time loops, plot twists, and flashbacks)

  • Using rich vocabulary

  • Writing mechanics (tailored to each child)
