Thriftaholic

Second hand

On April 24, 2022 a shopaholic goes to the biggest thrifting event of the year.

I get into my 2014 nissan. I turn on a youtube playlist and watch all the cars pass by.  We arrive at a long line of cars, the two adults in the front seat discuss where they have to go. Soon enough the car comes to a halt. “We’re here!” I jump out of the car, my big bell bottoms and colorful striped shirt swaying in the breeze. We start walking to the line.  It was long. After a few minutes of waiting the big building is only a few steps away from the us. People coming in and out, bags and gleeful faces fill the crowd. Mumbling nonsense fills the air as cars and teens go by.

When we walked in it felt unreal. Prom dresses, big shirts, little earrings and stickers fill up the place. I walked up to all the skirts first. They were big and princess-like. Then the corsets caught my attention. The day is almost over as it’s 6:07. I walk into my bedroom feeling a sense of cheer and pride as if I had just hit the jackpot. I take out my stickers placing each one on my bed. The 6 stickers are all anime characters from a favorite show. I then take out my yin and yang earrings with hearts as the dots and baby bottle earrings. Then I take out the last item. I remember my black corset that stops right at the chest. As I try it on I feel trendy and cool. I felt like the most in-style girl ever. The next day I wore almost everything I got ( no it did not match) but I was smiling all day long.

Without this experience I never would have had the clothes that I have and be grateful for my clothes. I looked back on my shopping experience and thought about what I got because I had been trying to find these types of clothes for months. I had finally got the clothes I wanted meaning my confidence would boost.

From this I learned that no matter how much you want something or think something is cool remember trends (just like your style) come and go.  If you ever experience this too, know that it’s going to be a fun journey 🤧. I honestly feel as though that trip was something that past-me would enjoy and only her. Now I have the complete opposite style, but all that aside it is still a memory that I will forever hold on to. So this has taught me and showed me how much people change and how much fun it is to thrift. It's even become a new hobby.
